Mount Juliet Golf Notes

Friday 24th October 2008

Unfortunately the Winter Series scheduled for 23rd October fell victim to the weather and after incessant rain which started in the morning and gradually got worse, any players who had commenced their round had to be called in and the competition abandoned for the day with an alternative date to be arranged at a later stage.

The next round of the Winter Series will be held on Thursday 6th November and this will be an 18 hole 3 Person Rumble.

Because of the reduction in daylight hours it has been the policy of Mount Juliet over the past couple of years to have a two tee start for all golf between the months of November and February. This formula has proved to be very successful and it means that golf tee times are from 10am to 12 noon each day with play commencing on the 1st and 10th tees only.

With Christmas not too far in the distance it is well worth considering our Special Golf Package only available “on Line” until 31st October – for that special friend or to treat oneself. It consists of 18 holes of golf at Mount Juliet Championship Golf Course, one hour’s tuition from our resident golf professional, Sean Cotter, and a lunch all the attractive price of €120. As already mentioned this offer is “on Line” only and is available from Monday to Thursday from now until March 2009. To avail of this offer click here.

There is a member’s 16 holes singles stableford for hampers next Sunday 2nd November and tee times are available through golf reservations on 056 7773064 / 056 7776071 or through our On-line Booking System.

The slope rating for Mount Juliet Golf Course is 148 off the White Tees and 136 off the Green Tees.

The Equation for getting Exact Handicap

Multiply your exact handicap by the slope rating for the course that is rated, i.e. white/green/red tees and divide by 113.

For Example
Slope Rating of 148   multiplied by   Exact handicap of 10.0
Then Divided by 113
Means that your handicap should be 13 to play off that particular course.

Winter Series

The next Winter Series takes place on Thursday 23rd October with a 4 Ball Betterball – There are still places available so call 056 777 3064 to book your place.

The event after this is Thursday 6th November and the format is a 3 Person Rumble

Last Thursday saw the last of the “majors” competed for with the running of the Lady President’s (Mrs Mary Jones) Prize.  The winner, with a great score of 39 points, was Ruth Mulholland off a handicap of 12.  Playing some superb golf, especially on the front nine holes which she covered in one over par gross, she won by a clear three shots from the Lady Captain, Rita Garvey.  Ruth faltered on the back nine with 16 points, having failed to score on the par three 11th after bogeying the long 10th, but she steadied herself on the remaining seven holes to register a further 14 points.  Rita played steady throughout her round of 36 points with nines of 17 and 19 points respectively and she was three points clear of Sandra Carr.  The day held up reasonably well weather wise and a great social evening was had by all in Mount Juliet House afterwards.

The first round of the Winter Series was played last Wednesday and with the introduction of a new sponsor, Marble City Travel, Kilkenny, there was a large turnout of teams for the competition which was a 4 Person Team Event.  In ideal conditions for golf, the scoring reflected the weather with the Gowran Park team of Mattie Byrne, Kevin Fennelly, Thos Farrell and P. J. Dreeling winning with a very good score of 91 points.  With the course playing its full length off the white tees, the Gowran Park quartet had 2 points to spare from their nearest rivals and a further 2 points back to third and fourth places.  The Gowran Park men had nines of 46 and 45 points respectively and had the added distinction of having three birdies on the short par three 3rd and having to discard one of the scores for recording purposes.  The format of the day was that two scores would count on the first seventeen holes and three scores to count on the last.  In second place came the Co. Tipperary team of Trevor Melbourne, Anthony Daly, Dave Lawton and Vincent Woodlock who in turn beat  Kilkenny men Billy Walsh and his brothers Ollie and Michael with Ollie Hickey.  The next competition in the Winter Series will be held on Thursday 23rd October and the format is a fourball betterball stableford.  Tee times for this event and future events in the series can be booked by phoning golf reservations at 056/7773064 or 7773071.
