Last Thursday saw the third round of the Marble City Travel sponsored Winter Series played on a dry but breezy day.  The format of the competition was a “Champagne Scramble” and this was a first at Mount Juliet.  All competitors enjoyed the new format with every player’s ability tested to its fullest.

The winners of the day were a team comprised of two players from Carrick-on-Suir which included a former outright winner of the series, John Mahon, and his trio returned a score of 93 points.  Their third player was a New Ross member, Seamus Phelan and David Butler was the man in the middle.  They had a good start to the day by scoring 51 points on the first nine holes but showed signs of wilting on the back nine by scoring 42 points.  They just held on to pip the team of Dick Daly, Billy Fitzpatrick and J.J. Tobin by a point. In fact, had any of the runners-up scored a bogey on the par 3 eleventh hole they would have won on a countback.  Unfortunately for them none of the trio could manage a bogey and so to the delight of the winners they managed to hold on and secure their place in the Grand Final in March.

The next round of the Winter Series takes place on Thursday 4th December and the format is a Three Person Team Event. Tee reservations can be made by phone at 056 7773071 or 7773064.

On Sunday last the final competition of 2008 for members and their guests was held and this was a fourball stableford betterball played over 16 holes with Christmas fare for all three places.  The convincing winners were James J. Brett and his son Niall with 36 points and they had two shots to spare over brothers Kevin and Noel McCartan who in turn just pipped Dave Wyer and his guest Eugene Colgan.  The winners played very solidly and recorded 21 points for the first nine holes and added a further 15 points for the last seven.

Winners qualify for the Grand Final to be played on Monday 30th March 2009.

Two competitions were held in the past week, one for members only and the other was the 3rd round of the Winter Series.

The members competition consisted of a 16 holes singles stableford for hampers and the competition was played over the first sixteen holes as daylight hours would have restricted a full eighteen holes being played.

Some good scoring was achieved on the day with the best score of 35 points returned by Jake Beirne, who at 15 years of age, is developing into a very promising player and now plays off a handicap of 2.  Jake easily won the junior section of the competition.  The senior section was won by Alan Byrne who scored 33 points and won by a shot from Terry O’Sullivan and Padraic O’Connor.  The ladies section was won by Sally Gleeson who returned a creditable 29 points.

In the Winter Series, which was played in ideal conditions last Thursday, the winners had a very achievable score of 75 points, one of the lowest scores to win this type of competition.  The format for the day was a 3 person rumble and whilst the winners played steady, but not spectacular golf, they were mildly surprised to come out on top afterwards. They now go forward to the Grand Final next March.

The next round of the series takes place on Thursday 20th November and the format is a 3 person “champagne” scramble which should throw up some interesting scores.  Bookings can be made by phoning golf reservations at 056/7773071 or 7773064
