Because of the impending weather conditions it has been necessary to cancel the Winter Series which was scheduled to be played this Thursday and to re-fix the date for next Thursday 29th January instead. The format for the competition remains the same i.e., Fourball Betterball Stableford and tee times may be reserved by phoning golf reservations @ 056/7773064 or the golf shop @ 056/7773071.

After such a severe past 6 weeks it is hoped that the weather will improve sufficiently for the golfing fraternity in the southeast to resume activities.

The Annual Review of Handicaps will have been carried out by all clubs at this stage and the Annual Review Report will have been sent to the Golfing Union of Ireland, Leinster Branch where necessary. All recommended increases in handicap must be approved by the Leinster Branch in accordance with the CONGU Unified Handicapping System.

The Member & Guest Day will take place on Sunday 25th Jan 2009. The format will be Fourball beterball Stableford, 3/4 handicap allowance. Event starts at 10am, with a 2 tee start on 1st and 10th tee. Reservations on-line at www.mountjuliet.ie or phone Anne or the Golf Shop on 056 777 3064.

As William Shakespeare said “Now is the Winter of our discontent” and what a December we have had in this part of the world as regards playing golf. With lots of course closures due to the severe frost and coupled with the fact that it was one of the wettest years on record it is hoped that 2009 will bring us all better weather than we had to endure in 2008 and of course some better news to lift the gloom.

The New Year brings us new competitions and with this in mind the Marble City Travel sponsored Winter Series resumes again on Thursday 29th January after the Christmas break. The competition will be a fourball betterball stableford and the winners will qualify for the Grand Final on Tuesday 31st March. There are already 16 players qualified in 2008 with room for a further 15 players in the coming weeks to make a total of 31 competitors for the final.

The final will be an 18 holes singles event played from the blue tees for the men and red tees for the ladies and unfortunately, as yet, no ladies have qualified but that can be easily rectified over the coming weeks. The remaining dates for the series are 12th and 15th February followed by the 10th and 24th March. The competitions vary from team events to rumbles and scrambles – so something to suit every player’s taste. Reservations can be made by phoning 056/7773071 or 7773064.
