Last Wednesday saw the Ladies Invitation Day for June take place and on Sunday last the J.B. Carr Trophy was played for.

The perpetual trophy, donated by the Carr family in memory of the illustrious Joe, goes to the best score for the day in either the ladies and men’s sections and there are no lines of demarcation drawn. The overall winner was the late J.B.’s daughter in law Sandra who won the trophy on a countback from three other players. How fitting it was that she won a trophy synonymous with her father- in- law. Sandra won it by virtue of her back nine holes where she scored 20 points to beat off her rivals who had 19 points. Michael Whelan scored 36 points to win the men’s section and he just pipped Paul Carty on a countback over the last six holes. Sandra also beat Lynda Hickey on a countback for the ladie’s section. Michael, Paul and Lynda were then beaten by Sandra for the overall prize. Congratulations to Sandra for her big win and to her husband John who leads the Golfer of the Year in his section. Lynda Hickey has established a decisive lead, after her showing in the J.B.Carr competition, in her section for the Golfer of the Year(ladies)

The Ladies Invitation Day was a fourball betterball stableford and there was a big entry for the day. Easy winners of the competition were Pauline McEnery and her partner Ann Marie Burns with 38 points who were 2 shots clear of Sally Gleeson and her partner Mary Phelan who in turn were a further shot clear of Margaret Twomey and Malu Treacy.

Players are reminded that the Captains’ prizes timesheet will be available on line from 9am next Monday 15th and booking can also be made by phone from 12 noon to Golf Reservations or Golf Shop.

The next Ladies Invitation Day takes place on Wednesday 1st July – 18 Holes Singles, 1 member and 2 guests.

The timesheet will open on Monday 22nd June.

The first round in the Summer Series was played on Tuesday 26th May and on a sunny but blustery afternoon the scoring did not match the warm conditions. The winners all hailed from Kanturk Golf Club in County Cork and posted a very achievable target of 81 points. The format of the competition was, as usual, a 4 person team event with two scores to count on the first 17 holes and three scores to count on the 18th hole only.

As it was a shotgun start there was no delay in finding the winning team and they only just got home by a point from two sets of brothers from Galway. The winners scored consistently enough but could only muster 2 points on the last hole where they expected to score at least six points. They had nines of 43 and 38 respectively to pip the team of brothers who returned 80 points.

The prizes for the day were sponsored by Titleist/Footjoy and were presented immediately afterwards. The next round in the Summer Series takes place on Wednesday 24th June and places can be booked by phoning golf reservations at 056/7773064 or 7773071 and again it will be a shotgun start at 2pm.

On the Inter-Club scene the last surviving team in the men’s section played Castlecomer in the Leinster Fourball Trophy. This resulted in a win for Castlecomer by the odd match of five and only on a tie hole at Castlecomer. The advantage of the home draw lay with Castlecomer so they had three matches at home and two were played at Mount Juliet.

At Mount Juliet Kevin McCartan and Ken MacDonald won after a very tight match but unfortunately Padraic O’Connor and Ronan Murphy lost. But the real drama was played out at Castlecomer where the Captain, Billy Murphy and his partner Dermot Divilly, making their debut, won handsomely. Tommy Butler and John Mulholland were dormie 5 down but took their opponents to the 18th before succumbing. In the last match, Chris McHugh and Arthur Hickey then went to the 19th before victory was secured by the home team.
