Last week saw the third competition of the popular Summer Series and this was sponsored Golf Andalucia, Spain and all prizes had a Spanish flavour to them.

The worthy winners on the day were all from Rathdowney Golf Club with their base camp situated in Ballyraggett. The team of Michael Dowling, Martin Devlin, John Gleeson and Alan Phelan had a very good score of 90 points to win by a clear five shots from their nearest challengers from Tipperary who in turn were just a shot ahead of a Wicklow based team.

The format was, as usual, two scores to count on the first 17 holes and three scores to count on the 18th but the winners had nines of 42 points and 48 points and never scored less than 4 points on any hole.

The runners-up would have closed the gap considerably but they faltered on the last four holes to leave the winners well clear.

The next competition in the series takes place Wednesday 12th August and this will be sponsored by clothing manufacturer Tommy Hilfiger. Once again it will be a “shotgun start” at 2pm and reservations can be made by phoning 056/7773064 or 7773071.

Next Sunday sees the continuation of the Member/Guest competitions with an 18 holes singles and the timesheet for this competition is almost full. The following week the annual Residential Trophy will be decided.

Last weekend saw the running of the July Monthly Medal and this proved to be a triumph for Alan Hoyne as he returned the best score of the day with 40 points.  He had only increased his handicap by a shot from 7 to 8 the previous week and as a result of Sunday’s exertions his handicap is now reduced to 6.  Alan had nines of 21 and 19 points respectively, playing his first nine holes in one over par gross and dropping three shots to par on his back nine for a further 39 gross which totalled 76 for the 18 holes.  Congratulations are the order of the day for his great score.

Category 2 was won by Frank Bowen with 34 points and Stephen O’Connor won category 3 with 28 points.

The ladies section was won by Ruth Mulholland with 34 points and she just pipped Sally Gleeson by a shot.  Both ladies are low handicaps so it just proved that the fine score of Alan was no flash in the pan as on a course that was playing every bit of its 7000 yards, the low handicappers came out on top.

As a result of this competition, the Golfer of the Year leader boards have tightened up considerably.  Still in the lead is Andrew Nixon but Alan Hoyne and David Kelly have closed the gap to four points.

In the ladies division Lynda Hickey still enjoys a commanding lead but this has been reduced by Sally Gleeson and Ruth Mulholland as a result of their endeavours over last weekend.

The next competition will be held for members and their guests on Sunday 26th July and this will be an 18 holes singles stableford.

Category 1 Alan Hoyne (8)                  40 points

Category 2 Frank Bowen (13)              34 points
