The second Member Guest competition of the New Year took place last Sunday in nice Spring conditions. The competition was a fourball stableford, ¾ handicap, and it was necessary to have a shotgun start at 12 noon due to early morning frost the previous night. This did not deter the fine entry of competitors from returning some excellent scoring on the day with Callan G.C. to the fore in the overall allocation of prizes. The winning scores all exceeded the target of 45 points set by the first fourball to finish. The winning score of 47 points was returned by the in-form partnership of John O’Dwyer and Paul Cashin who won by virtue of a better back nine holes from their nearest opponents, Liam Duggan and his brother Fr. Pat. The third place was filled by Michael Collins and Joe Mulcare with 46 points and they just got there on a countback.
The winners had an excellent combination of three under par gross, 69 shots, to clinch the first prize with nines of 23 and 24 points respectively. They failed to drop a shot to par in their round and had birdies on the fifth and seventeenth holes, both par 5’s, with a two on the par 3 fourteenth.
Next Sunday sees the resumption of the Winter League for members and this is followed by a nine hole competition for newly elected members with a social get-together in Kendalls.
