The Lady Captain’s Prize to the Men and the Captain’s Prize to the Ladies were played for last weekend and these end of the season “majors” were won by Denis Treacy and Sandra Carr with scores of 38 and 41 points respectively. Denis just held on to win the men’s section with nines of 22 and 16 points. After a great first eleven holes, he had scored 27 points which represented one over par gross, he dropped seven shots to par on the inward seven holes and the eighteenth just could not come quick enough. However he survived and duly collected the lovely special prize on offer from Lady Captain Helen. Hard luck to young Hugh O’ Connor who returned another 38 points but was not eligible to win first prize and was placed second with Vincent Clifford in third place on 37 points.
The Ladies section had a clear cut winner in Sandra who had a two shot advantage over her nearest opponent. This has been a great year for Sandra who has now lost six shots off her handicap in the past few months. Again Sandra was the recipient of a beautiful prize from Captain Padraic. Second place was won by Susan Mahony with 39 points and Julie Godson filled the third spot. After completing the round there was a barbecue on offer behind the eighteenth green and this went down a treat.
The Golfer of the Year for the Men has now joint leaders with only one competition to go(September Medal). Richie Guilfoyle and James E. Brett have 30 points each with Andrew Nixon on 29 points followed by Michael Brennan on 28 points. Then there are still possibilities for Dan Kavanagh, Denis Treacy and Pat Garvey of overhauling all four leading players depending on the results in the last competition. Lynda Hickey has now been confirmed as the winner of the Ladie’s section as she cannot be overtaken.
