Unfortunately the weather played havoc with the competition scheduled for last Sunday’s “Drive In” of the Captains’ for 2009 but nevertheless a large turnout of members and friends attended the inauguration ceremony.  Billy and Sheila turned up in the now familiar pony and trap and proceeded to hit two fine shots down the practice ground in the traditional manner.  Even though no golf could take place it still did not deter everybody from having a great social evening which continued long into the night.

The golf competition will now take place next Sunday 14th December over 14 holes and the format will be a fourball betterball stableford.  The timesheet for this event is open and members can obtain a tee time in the usual way by phoning golf reservations or the golf shop.

Last week saw the fourth round of the Marble City Travel sponsored Winter Series and the winners were from Ballyragett and all members of Rathdowney Golf Club.  They turned on the style in a big way by returning 87 points in the 3 person team event and the crowd were shouting “easy” from a long way out.  The team of Martin Devlin, Michael Dowling and John Gleeson had nines of 44 and 43 points respectively and never dipped below scoring 4 points on any hole.  They now go forward to take their place in the Grand Final in March next.

The last round of the Winter Series before the Christmas break takes place next Wednesday 17th December and the format is a 3 person rumble.  Tee times for this competition are still available by phoning 056 7773064 or 7773071.

The Captain and Lady Captain’s Drive In was held on Sunday 3rd December with over 80 members taking part. Terry Sullivan and Brona Reidy are the new Captains’ for 2007 with Peter Quigley and Rita Garvey the Vice Captains’.

Due to the awful weather conditions, it was feared that the day would have to be cancelled but on a very windy day the rain held off and the programme of the day was completed.

The competitions on the day were over nine holes so competitors had the choice of playing either the front or the back nine. The format of the competitions was a two person rumble with one score to count on the first six holes and both scores to count on the last three holes and this proved very popular with all the members. There were a total of twelve hampers given out to the lucky winners who braved the elements and some good scoring was recorded on both nine holes.

The usual Christmas fare of mince pies, mulled wine and hot toddies were in good supply with Claire Somers and Sean Cotter managing the bar at the 19th in the usual seasonal manner. The drive in took place shortly after 3.30pm with both incoming captains arriving in the now familiar pony and trap.

After indulging in some Christmas cheer in the President’s bar the presentation of prizes took place in the Hunters Yard, where the President Des Fitzgerald, welcomed the new Captains’, their guests and the members. A large crowd retired to Kendals afterwards for an evening dinner which was followed by more seasonal cheer.

We would like to say a big thank you to outgoing Captains’ Helen Comerford and Padraic O’Connor for their input into a very successful year in office.
