Last Thursday saw the last of the “majors” competed for with the running of the Lady President’s (Mrs Mary Jones) Prize.  The winner, with a great score of 39 points, was Ruth Mulholland off a handicap of 12.  Playing some superb golf, especially on the front nine holes which she covered in one over par gross, she won by a clear three shots from the Lady Captain, Rita Garvey.  Ruth faltered on the back nine with 16 points, having failed to score on the par three 11th after bogeying the long 10th, but she steadied herself on the remaining seven holes to register a further 14 points.  Rita played steady throughout her round of 36 points with nines of 17 and 19 points respectively and she was three points clear of Sandra Carr.  The day held up reasonably well weather wise and a great social evening was had by all in Mount Juliet House afterwards.

The first round of the Winter Series was played last Wednesday and with the introduction of a new sponsor, Marble City Travel, Kilkenny, there was a large turnout of teams for the competition which was a 4 Person Team Event.  In ideal conditions for golf, the scoring reflected the weather with the Gowran Park team of Mattie Byrne, Kevin Fennelly, Thos Farrell and P. J. Dreeling winning with a very good score of 91 points.  With the course playing its full length off the white tees, the Gowran Park quartet had 2 points to spare from their nearest rivals and a further 2 points back to third and fourth places.  The Gowran Park men had nines of 46 and 45 points respectively and had the added distinction of having three birdies on the short par three 3rd and having to discard one of the scores for recording purposes.  The format of the day was that two scores would count on the first seventeen holes and three scores to count on the last.  In second place came the Co. Tipperary team of Trevor Melbourne, Anthony Daly, Dave Lawton and Vincent Woodlock who in turn beat  Kilkenny men Billy Walsh and his brothers Ollie and Michael with Ollie Hickey.  The next competition in the Winter Series will be held on Thursday 23rd October and the format is a fourball betterball stableford.  Tee times for this event and future events in the series can be booked by phoning golf reservations at 056/7773064 or 7773071.

July Monthly Medal / Golfer of the Year Update

Last Sunday saw the July Monthly Medal decided and as usual there were 3 categories for the men and then the ladies category.  The best score of the day was returned by Mary Quigley who had 46 points in the Ladies category and needless to say she won this category by the proverbial mile from her nearest competitor Brenda O’Sullivan who had a very creditable 37 points.

In the men’s division, the scoring also matched the warm day with David Kelly winning category 1 with 37 points on a countback from Pat Price Jr., and categories 2 and 3 were won by Colm Hyland and Tim Kavanagh both returning 41 points in their respective divisions.

As a result of this competition there was a slight change in the Golfer of the Year for both the Ladies and the Men.  The men’s section is still being led by Stephen Price but his brother Pat has now jumped into second place with Pat Doyle now relegated to third place.  In the ladies section the overall leader last month, Mary Quigley, has extended her lead over Rebecca Nixon.

The July Summer Series Team Event kindly sponsored by Coca Cola Ltd., took place on 8th July and this competition proved to be a runaway success for the Dublin based team of Philip Wardick, Shay Doherty, his son Paul and Cathy McCormack who won with the proverbial “ton in hand”.  With a fabulous score of 97 points, they had eight points to spare over their nearest rivals.  They had nines of 45 and 52 points respectively and on the one hole (18th) where three scores counted they only scored 6 points.
In second place came the Clare based team of single figure golfers led by Nicky Duggan who pipped Jack O’Keeffe’s team by virtue of a better back nine holes.  The Ballyragget quartet of Martin Devlin, Brendan Melody, Michael Dowling and Justin Ring were fourth.
