At long last two competitions got off the ground in the past two weeks and these were the first round of the Winter Series and also the first member/guest competition of the new season. Both the Winter Series and the member and guest competitions proved to be a triumph for members of local clubs. The Winter Series was won by a team from Callan Golf Club and the Member/Guest competition included members of Gowran Park and Carlow Golf Clubs.

The Winter Series was won with 87 points and the winning team put together nines of 43 and 44 points. The team started well scoring 7 points on the long 2nd and thereafter scored solidly with their worst score on any hole being four points.

The Member/Guest competition was a fourball betterball stable ford and this was won with 41 points. The winners had 18 points for the first nine holes but really came to life on the second nine amassing a further 23 points. The runners-up scored 40 points with a solid 20 points on each nine holes.

The next round of the Winter Series takes place on Wednesday 9th March and next Sunday there is a member/guest competition with a one tee start as the two tee starts are now finished with the arrival of March. The competition next Sunday is a three person rumble over 18 holes for a member and his/her two guests and scoring is by stableford.

The last major competition for 2009, the Lady President’s (Mrs. Mary Jones) Prize, was played on Thursday 1st October. This proved to be a triumph for Ruth Mulholland as she captured her fourth prize in this competition and her second in a row having won it in 2008. Last year playing off 12 handicap, Ruth returned 39 points and this year playing off a handicap of 11, Ruth won with 38 points.

Ruth just held on by a shot from Ruth Skehan, where she scored 14 points on her first nine holes but turned on the style on her second nine holes with a great score of 23 points. However, Ruth Mulholland has to be commended for her consistency throughout her round off such a low handicap. The winner Ruth Mulholland had nines of 20 and 18 points respectively. Ruth Skehan held on to second place by virtue of her last nine holes from Ita Slattery. A great social evening was held in Kendals Restaurant on the night when all prize winners were presented with their prizes.

This week sees the last of the Ladies Invitation Days for 2009 and there is a large turnout for the end of season rumble competition. Next Sunday week sees the Member/Guest competition conclude before the hour returns to Winter schedule and this will be an 18 holes singles. Play will be in threes and this will be the last competition over the full course until next March. Tee time reservations can be made at the golf shop or with reservations. Next week it is hoped to give details of the popular Winter Series which will return in November.
