Last Sunday saw the last of the Member/Guest competitions over the full course before the daylight hours are shortened this week. The competition was an 18 holes singles stableford and the scoring matched the nice Autumnal weather we are experiencing over the past few weeks.

The best score of the day was returned by a County Tipperary guest, Ronan Spain, who had a magnificent 44 points off his handicap of 13. Ronan played very consistently throughout his round with nines of 21 and 23 points respectively. He covered the first nine holes in 39 shots and his back nine in 38 shots for a gross of 77 shots which is only five over par. He dropped shots to par on the back nine at the par three, 14th and the par five, 17th with pars on the other seven holes. He registered a double bogie five at the par three, 6th hole. For the remainder of his round he was consistency personified. Ronan had three shots to spare over Ted Hoyne from Gowran Park, who must have thought that he was in with a real chance of first prize by returning 41 points. Local member John Enright scored 37 points for third place with a number of similar scores failing to reach the winners rostrum.

The Ladies section was won by Powerscourt member, Ursula Dowling, with 36 points. This is Ursula’s first prize at Mount Juliet. Ursula played steady throughout her round and recorded nines of 18 points for her total.

The next competition will be a hamper competition over 16 holes for members only and the format will be a singles stableford.

Last week saw the Ladies Invitation Day for July decided with a good turnout for this 18 holes singles stableford. The scoring was good with 38 points recorded by the top two players. Suzanne Sherry from Powerscourt just pipped Maire Shee from Clonmel by virtue of a better back nine holes. Suzanne scored 22 points for her last nine holes against Maire’s 20 points. In third place with 36 points came Maura Cooney also from Clonmel. The nines were won by Kathy Whyte and Pauline McEnery. The usual social evening followed and the next competition in the series will be held on 5th August. This will be a four person team event for the members and their guests.

As a result of the Captains Prizes, Lynda Hickey has further tightened her grip on the Golfer of the Year competition in the ladies section and she now holds an emphatic lead over Sally Gleeson with the rest of the competitors trailing in their wakes.

The men’s section is a more open affair with Andrew Nixon holding a slender lead over John Carr with David Kelly in third place and a number of other contenders in the wings. Next weekend sees the July medal down for decision and as this is another competition in the G.O.Y., who knows, there could be a change in the leader boards on Sunday night.

Due to the untimely death of our esteemed Chairman, Dr. Tim Mahony, the Captains’ Prizes that were scheduled to take place two weeks ago were postponed until Saturday 26th July when a new timesheet will be made available and this will open on Monday 14th July at 12 noon.

In the meantime, the McCalmont Cup Matchplay has reached the quarter final stage and the following pairings have to play before the end of July; John Mulholland v Ray O’Malley, Bill Hutchinson v Andrew Nixon, Chris McHugh v Pat Price Sr., and Michael Doyle v Una O’Sullivan.

Last Wednesday saw the July Ladies Invitation Day take place and the format was a three person scramble. The scoring was very good with all the prize winners breaking the 40 points barrier. Ann Cowley had the envious distinction of scoring a hole in one at the par 3 third hole, for which she received a special prize on the day.

The July Monthly Medal will be played for next Sunday and hopefully the weather will have improved somewhat for the players. As usual, there will be three categories for the men and the ladies category
