Last week there was a bag of mixed luck on the Inter Club front with two ladies teams in action. The Challenge Cup team were pitted against Kilkenny Golf Club at the neutral venue of Callan and they came out on top by a margin of 3½ matches to 1½ matches. The format of the competition was 5 singles and Mary Cotter, Ann Murphy and Wendy Beirne all won their respective matches with Dorothy Kilroy securing a half in her match. While on the course. Brenda O’Sullivan lost narrowly to her opponent.

The All Ireland Fourball team lost narrowly to the ladies of Carrick-on-Suir Golf Club but only on a countback. In this competition two pairs play at home and two pairs play away. While our two home pairs achieved victory, the away players lost and on a countback of holes won and lost, Mount Juliet came out on the wrong end. The pairings were Helen Scully/Ruth Skehan and Helen Hedigan/Mary Fulton, both of these pairings played at Mount Juliet. At Carrick-on-Suir, the pairings were Sally Gleeson/Jon Hegarty and Myra Phelan/Rita Garvey. It is interesting to note that Helen and Ruth were 5 down after nine holes but recovered for a great victory on the 18th.

Next Sunday sees the running of the J.B. Carr Trophy in memory of our former illustrious President Joe, and this is a Golfer of the Year competition with extra points available.

On Tuesday next the open Summer Series for teams of four players continues and reservations for tee times can be made by phoning 056 7773071.

Summer conditions the order of the day

The first Ladies Invitation Day for 2010 was played last Wednesday and the format was an 18 holes three person scramble. The deserving winners on the day were the North Dublin team led by former Lady Captain Ita Slattery. They had almost 2 shots to spare over their nearest rivals led by another former Lady Captain, Rita Garvey. On a very pleasant day there was a good turnout for the first invitation day of the season although the course was still playing long after the rain of the previous two days.

Last Sunday saw another Member/Guest Day competition and the format was a 4 person team event over 18 holes with play off the green tee markers.

This competition was played in summer like conditions and saw the team led by former captain, Padraic O’Connor, emerge as convincing winners from the Captain’s, Jim Cusack, team of Kildare based visitors.

The next team in action in the inter club series is the Barton Cup team who take on the might of Kilkenny Golf Club next Saturday evening and then the ladies go to Callan Golf Club on Monday next to play Borris Golf Club in the first round of the Challenge Cup. This is part of the new conditions pertaining to the competitions run by the I.L.G.U. whereby these matches must be played at neutral venues.

The April Monthly Medal is scheduled to be played on Sunday 25th April and the timesheet for this event is now open. Members can reserve a tee time “online” or by phoning golf reservations. This is another round of the Golfer of the Year competition for ladies and men and it will also be a qualifying competition for the McCalmont Cup Matchplay

Definitely things are beginning to look up weather wise as we had another two competitions in the last week. This makes a total of four in the past month which is four more than we had in the previous eight weeks.
The Member/Guest competition was a 3 person rumble and on a very cold, wet day it was a case of the survival of the fittest. The fittest on the day were Kevin McCartan’s team who returned a good score of 75 points. They just pipped the team led by last year’s Lady Captain, Rita Garvey, by a point. Kevin’s team had nines of 32 and 43 points respectively whilst Rita’s team scored 29 and 45 points.
The penultimate round of the Marble City Travel sponsored Winter Series was played last week as well and this resulted in a win for three members of Muskerry Golf Club. The team, all low handicappers, had a very commendable score of 75 points and as usual play was off the white tees for the men and red tees for the ladies.
They just pipped a team of fellow Corkonians from Harbour Point. The winners had sixes of 14 points, 26 points and finally 35 points. The winning formula was that each of the three players scored on the last six holes whereas their rivals all had glitches on these holes. The trio now join the other qualifiers for the Grand Final on 31st March. Only one round of the series remains and this is scheduled for Tuesday 24th March and 24 players will then line out on 31st March to see who is champion for 2008/2009.
