The present spell of wet and windy weather had an effect on both competition entries played in the last week. The second round of the popular Winter Series was played last Thursday and this proved to be a benefit for the Dormer family who hail from Clare and are regular competitors in the series. Together with their friend P.J. O’Neill they spreadeagled the field and returned a fine score of 94 points to win convincingly. Robert, Jason and Martin Dormer, all brothers who play out of Woodstock in Clare, certainly put on the style for their first nine holes turning in a fine score of 50 points. They scored five six pointers at the 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 8th holes, then to round off their good play scored seven points at the 9th. On the back nine, they kept the momentum going on the 10th 11th and 12th for a further 17 points and then they added another 27 points for their last six for a total of 44 points. They won by a handsome 7 points from their nearest rivals. The next competition in the series will take place on Thursday 25th November and again it will be a four person team event with 2 scores to count on all 18 holes.

Because of the dire forecast for last Saturday night and Sunday a smaller entry than usual played for the Hamper over 16 holes on Sunday. This was a singles stableford and some good scoring prevailed on a fine day which turned a little colder as the evening closed in. The storm did not arrive until after dark and everybody played in dry and calm conditions. The men’s section was won by Sean O’Neill who returned 36 points and in second place came Paul Barrett on 34 points winning on a countback. The ladies section was won by the Lady Captain, Sally Gleeson with 30 points.

The Winter Series was played again last Thursday just in time before the “freeze up” engulfed the country. The team of players from Clare, who were stranded by the recent floods there, made sure that they got to Mount Juliet on this occasion and duly reaped the rewards. A team mainly comprising of three brothers from Woodstock Golf Club, who have been regular competitors in the series over the past number of years, made the long trip worthwhile by romping to victory and ensuring their place in the Grand Final next April. The three Dormer brothers ably assisted by their fourth member, P.J.O’ Neill, scored 83 points on a testing day with the course playing its full length.

They scored nines of 42 and 41 points respectively and they had only two worrying moments and these came on the long par five 5th and the par four 18th. On the 5th only two players scored and both had bogey sixes whereas on the 18th the same thing happened with two players scoring bogies as well even though three scores were to count. This resulted in a total of six points being secured for both holes. However there were several similar stories from the remainder of the teams who participated and so the Clare men held on for memorable victory. The series returns again in mid January after the Christmas break. On that festive note may I wish all our members and visitors alike a Merry Christmas and a successful golfing New Year.
