Ballylinch Stud
Ballylinch Stud was founded in 1914 by Major Dermot McCalmont as a base for his champion racehorse The Tetrarch. The stud is situated on 1,000 acres of exceptional land which has been farmed since the Middle Ages by the monks of the nearby Jerpoint Abbey and later by the Earls of Carrick.
The McCalmont family enjoyed great success at Ballylinch and developed several influential stallions including The Tetrarch, his son Tetratema, and later Fortino (the sire of Caro) and Sassafras. They also developed the highly successful family descending from the outstanding broodmare Messopotamia, and in all bred eleven Classic winners at Ballylinch.
In 1987, Ballylinch was purchased together with Mount Juliet by Killeen Investments, an Irish company whose chairman Dr. Tim Mahony has put in place an investment programme which has seen Mount Juliet develop into one of Ireland's most prestigious hotels.
The same standards of excellence have been set at Ballylinch where the facilities are now world class and an exceptional band of broodmares has been assembled. The fruits of this investment are being seen on racecourses around the world with runners such as Priory Belle (winner of Moyglare Stud Stakes Group 1), River Keen, winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup, Gr.1, Belmont Park, USA and the Woodward Stakes, Gr.1.
