The Equestrian Heritage of Mount Juliet Estate: From Major McCalmont to Modern-Day Riding Retreats. FAQs About our Trails & Meet the Horses
A Legacy Carved in Hoofprints
Mount Juliet Estate is known today for its refined hospitality and world-class golf, but beneath the manicured fairways lies a proud equestrian tradition that dates back centuries. Our heritage is shaped by the McCalmont family, whose passion for thoroughbred breeding and racing left a mark not only on the estate but on Irish equestrian history itself.
Major Hugh McCalmont: Racing Royalty
A soldier, statesman, and sportsman, Major Hugh McCalmont was a towering figure in 19th-century equestrian circles. He established Ballylinch Stud here at Mount Juliet Estate, a venture that became synonymous with exceptional Irish bloodstock and a cornerstone of Kilkenny’s horse breeding tradition.
His involvement with the early days of Gowran Park Racecourse is still celebrated today through the Thyestes Chase, named after a McCalmont-owned horse that won the first major race at Gowran. It remains one of Ireland’s most prestigious National Hunt fixtures.
Lady McCalmont and the Family Legacy
Lady McCalmont shared her husband’s love of the land and was deeply involved in the social and sporting life of the estate. Together, their influence extended beyond racing into equine care, horsemanship, and rural life. The McCalmont family legacy is still woven into the fabric of Mount Juliet Estate, from the rolling paddocks to the trails along the River Nore.

A Day in the Life of a Mount Juliet Horse
Our horses are the heart of the equestrian centre. Their wellbeing is central to everything we do.
Each day begins with breakfast and grooming , an essential time for checking in on their health and happiness. If they are working that day, they are tacked up for the trails. Between rides, they are untacked, brushed and given moments of rest, care, or even a massage.
After their final ride, they are given a second feed (depending on their individual diet), groomed or washed and turned out to graze in one of the estate’s 7 paddocks, or one of 3 off-site fields, all lush and green.
